Until June 2015 Auckland Transport ran ageing DC class diesel locomotives, made by General Motors Canada, on many of the urban and suburban rail routes through the city. As the DC’s strained to haul up the inclines they produced a very specific sound signature. These sounds, reverberating off the surrounding urban fabric, played a significant part in defining the spatial experiences of the city.
